Northwoods League: Huskies finish first half in wrong column

In the final game of the first half, the Huskies got off to a good start in the first half of the game, but faltered late in an 8-5 loss to the Rochester Honkers on Monday.
Duluth offered left-hander Caden Griffin (1-2). While effective at avoiding contact, he walked eight batters. He did not allow any hits in the first four innings and posted a line of 4.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 8 BB, 2 K. He was backed by Michael Sarhatt’s trio, Zach Statzer and Ethan Hammerberg. Statzer was beaten up with defeat under the lights of Wade Stadium after the Honkers took the lead on a sacrificial robbery from Mac Horvath, who is arguing strongly for a star appearance. Horvath went 1 on 1 with three walks, one stolen base and the sacrifice.
It looked like the Huskies put on cruise control after first-year manager Paul Weidner was kicked out after contesting a first base call. After their skipper’s throw, Rochester scored seven unanswered points and never looked back. With an impressive performance in the bullpen, three Honkers helped Rochester to their 15th win of the season. Marcus Krupke (1-4) took his first win of the year as he was the first to enter after the start, Kenny Lippman came out. The Honkers received four errors on behalf of the Huskies and capitalized on all four.
Charlie Rhee delivered to the plate in five innings, going 3 for 3 in those appearances, including a brace and a run scored in 1st. He finished 3-for-5 and made a handful of plays in Left Field. Mike Boeve continues his domination at the plate, singular twice. In the ninth, as the game seemed out of reach, Michael Brooks hit Brett Paulsen and scored a brace down center left, he scored the only point in the ninth.
Duluth will travel to Eau Claire to kick off the second half against their division foe the Eau Claire Express at Carson Park for a home and away match. The Huskies will see a clean slate, a 0-0 record with likely Johnny Guzman taking the bump. In his penultimate start, he faced the Express on June 23 and posted an impressive IP of 7.0, 5H, 0R, 2BB, 4K in a 4-0 Huskies victory.
