Everton are ready to loan out Jarrad Branthwaite this summer as they work on a deal for James Tarkowski, according to the Mail On Sunday.
The newspaper reported via its Sunday print edition (June 5, page 150) that Frank Lampard thinks 19-year-old Branthwaite needs more playing time.
Express reporter Ryan Taylor reported via his personal Twitter account on Saturday (June 4) that the Blues have submitted a “formal contract offer” to sign Tarkowski, 29, on a free transfer with his contract at Burnley due to expire at the end of this month.
Branthwaite is clearly a talented young player.
The 19-year-old has already played 13 times for Everton’s senior side and in the 2021/22 season he managed to make six Premier League appearances.
He even scored in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on December 16.
Branthwaite’s performances weren’t amazing but he’s still young and he faces the pressure of playing in a very poor side who were struggling on the wrong side of the table.
It wasn’t ideal for him to play as much as he did due to injuries and suspensions in the back line and you could see in some of those displays that he might not be ready yet. .
However, we’ve also seen enough of Branthwaite to suggest he has a future at Goodison Park and the club really shouldn’t let him down.
Sending him on loan to a top-flight Championship club will do the youngster the greatest good.
He was loaned out before, of course, playing for Blackburn on a half-season loan in 2020/21.
The former Carlisle defender only played 10 times during that loan spell, so while that would have been good for Branthwaite, it wasn’t the best of loans.
He needs a full season in the Championship to ply his trade and return to Everton a better player than when he left.
Moreover, Tarkowski’s potential arrival will push him up the pecking order and bring him back into the Under-23s, so this move benefits everyone.
In other Everton news, the Blues could be forced into a big sale as Alisher Usmanov’s name comes up in a transfer report.
