Eastern North Carolina braces for winter storm

PITT COUNTY, NC (WITN) – In the list of supplies needed for a winter storm, an item quickly sold out Wednesday at Lowe’s Home Improvement in Pitt County.

“We sold four pallets today and expect another four to eight tomorrow,” supervisor Kyle Sharp said of the rock salt.

Other items on the list included generators, generator gas, firewood, chainsaws, pipe insulation, pipe wraps and faucet covers, according to Sharp.

For Mary Link, the demand for rock salt was expected, having lived in Pitt County for over 40 years. Link said she used rock salt to treat her driveway and melt snow and ice.

“A lot of times when you walk in they don’t have salt,” Link said. “They’re all sold out but…I have it in my garage every year. I usually keep two bags.

Link, a Wisconsin native, is one of many eastern North Carolina residents bracing for a winter mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has been road treatment.

“We brined all major roads and most minor roads,” NCDOT communications manager Tim Hass said. “We will continue this process tomorrow.”

Hass said brine is better than salt in that it sticks to pavement, so unless there is flooding, the department is confident brine will stick to pavement. Hass added that crews will continue to treat the roads and if there is a buildup, they will switch to snow removal.

As for potential power outages, Greenville Utilities said it is also preparing.

“We actually have tree pruning crews whose specific purpose is to go out throughout the year and prune trees that are near our power lines,” the communications manager said, Steve Hawkley.

In the event of a power outage in Washington, Tracy Warren said he was ready.

“We thought about the generators and everything, so we said, ‘Let’s stop today and see what they have,'” Warren said of Lowe’s. let’s give one to [our] daughter and son-in-law. We are excited to be ready for this wintry weather.
